What inspired you to apply for ProInspire’s Managing for Success Program?
The opportunity for strengthening my managerial skills by learning and exchanging knowledge not only with the program instructors, but also with other M4S program participants. Also, I am interested in bringing this knowledge back to my organization.
What has surprised you about being a manager in the non-profit sector?
The commitment and passion of people trying to make this world a better place.
What is a typical day like for you on the job?
On a typical day I participate meetings with my team in North Carolina and Washington DC to discuss professional development programs that we currently have. I spend a lot of my time planning, designing, implementing and evaluating learning interventions related to those professional development programs.
What attributes or short story can you share about the best manger you’ve ever had?
Few years ago I had the opportunity to work with someone who I consider the best boss I have ever had. Although she was demanding and had high expectations of us as a team, at the same time she knew and understood our specific roles within the department and respected me as a professional and a person giving me all her support and trust. There were some clashes between us but I think that was because the nature of the job and because she kept me and the rest of the team accountable for the final results. Her style was the open communication and always was respectful of us as professionals.
What do you see as the biggest challenge for non-profits in five years?
One of the biggest challenges now and then in five years for the non-profit sector is funding/political instability due to the sequestration.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I like the outdoors; hiking and bicycling are my favorite. I also practice sports such as tennis and soccer in a weekly basis.
Where do you see yourself in 5, 10, and 20 years?
In 5 to 10 year probably managing my own consulting company. Enjoying life and family.
On a typical Friday night, what might you be found doing?
There is no typical Friday, sometimes I chill out at home, sometimes hang out with friends, go to the movies or have a drink in a bar and dance. Go for a jog or even work late.
What advice do you have for a new non-profit manger?
Lead by example, do what you say, manage your time and plan ahead so you can give clear guidance to your team. Learn as much as you can about the organization and what each team member’s position does. Even if you are not an expert, you should be able understand each position and/or do the basics.
